Bookworm Award

Desert Rose at Desert Rose Booklogue tagged me with this gorgeous award, my very first award. Thank you Desert Rose.
It's a meme too so here goes. Here's how it works: Open the book closest to you, not your favorite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, to page 56. Write out the fifth sentence, as well as two to five sentences following there.

The book nearest to me is the book I'm reading right now.

What a Pirate Desires by Michelle Beattie

Joe cast Luke a warning look and moved down the beach, his boots sinking in the pearly sand.

"So what's the rest of this pland of your?" Luke asked, toying with a piece of driftwood he'd picked up.

"I plan on staying close to you, Luke."

He stepped near enough to touch, but didn't. The wind gently tugged her hair and swept it across her shoulders.

I'm so excited because Pamela Clare has been getting a lot of buzz with some of my online friends and was going to check her out.

Twilight - the movie - Review

REVIEW:

OK, so I'm probably one of the only people who have not read the Twilight books, but I do know a lot about them. My sister has read them and a lot of my online book buddies have read then. I also work at a bookstore. With that said I did go with my sister to see the movie.

I really enjoyed the movie. I thought the relationship between Bella and Edwards was great. I love some of the one liners that Edward had. I did think that the fight seen with Jacob was a little anti-climatic.

Overall I thought that it was pretty good and worth the price of admission. So much so that I have picked up Twilight just to see how different it is compare to the movie. Who knows maybe I will fall in love with the series like everyone else.

First Lady by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

RATING 5!!!

Book Description: How does the most famous woman in the world hide in plain sight? The beautiful young widow of the President of the United States thought she was free of the White House, but circumstances have forced her back into the role of First Lady. Not for long, however, because she has made up her mind to escape-if only for a few days-so she can live the life of an ordinary person. All she needs is the perfect disguise....and she's just found it.

With the entire nation searching for her, she meets a seductive man who has a secret of his own and an appeal that threatens to awaken the woman behind the national icon. With him are two orphaned little girls desperate for a family. Together, they'll take a journey across the heartland chasing their own American dream.

Review: SEP is one of my top fav authors and an auto buy. For some reason I never read this book. I'm so glad I finally read it, well I listened to it. It's a great story, the chemistry between Matt and Neely was great. I know a lot of people don't like kids in their romance books, but Lucy and Button were great and the story wouldn't have worked without them. The concept is so different the First Lady out in the real world after living her whole life in the public eye and not being able to have a normal life. It was great seeing the simple things people take for granted through Neely's eyes.

At His Command by Brenda Coulter

Rating 3.75

Book Description: In one short month, cheerful army nurse Madeline Bright has become the darling of Prairie Springs, Texas. And if ex-pilot Jake Hopkins isn't careful, she might just conquer his heart. She's young, pretty and blithe-spirited…he's older and jaded. But being around Maddie brings back too many painful memories. Jake still feels guilty about failing to save Maddie's brother in an army helicopter crash years ago. So no matter how much Maddie wants to be in his life, for her own good, Jake can't allow that. He'll never have a normal, stable life.
And sweet Madeline deserves nothing less.

Review: This is not the type of book I typically read. I had to pick an inspirational book for a challenge I'm trying to complete. I'm glad I picked this one. Jack and Maddie are a very believable couple and their relationship very real. This story is about a solider who comes home from the middle east feeling like he lost everything. Jack is a flawed hero, but you can understand why he has become the way he is. Maddie is a great heroine she has know Jack most of her life and has been trying to reach out to Jack. If your looking for sweet romance with a message pick this up.

Rough and Ready by Sandra Hill

Rating 4.5

Book Description: It takes nothing short of a miracle to catapult Lt. Torolf Magnusson and his team of Navy SEALs back in time to eleventh-century Norselands. First on the agenda: destroy the evil villain who terrorized his ancestors and a nation.
But when the sexy SEALs find they've landed in the middle of a sanctuary--filled with women, well, Hoo-yah! Their game plans are put on hold, much to the distress of Hilda, the head of the sanctuary. At first resistant, she soon succumbs to Torolf's passionate advances. Suddenly the term "Special Forces" takes on a whole new meaning. But with victory in sight for Torolf, Hilda must face the fact that their love may not survive the test of time...

My Review: This book is pure fun!! All Sandra Hill books are fun!! I haven't read a Sandra Hill book in a long time. I love Torolf he is sexy, funny and a Navy Seal (my favorite type of hero). What makes this different from other time travel books that I have read is that they go back and forth. If your looking for a fun, sexy read definitely pick up this series.

The Lion's Lady by Julie Garwood

Rating 4.5

Description: Christina Bennett had taken London society by storm. The ravishing beauty guarded the secret of her mysterious past untily the night Lyon, Marquis of Lyonwood, stole a searching sensous kiss. An arrogant nobleman with a pirate's passions, he tasted the wild fire smoldering beneath Christina's cool charm and swore to posess her...
But the feisty and defiant Christina would not be do easily conquered. Mistress of her heart and of her fortune, she resisted Lyon's sensuous caresses. She dared not surrender to his love... for then, she must also forsake her precious secret... and her promised destiny.

Review: This book was great. I love it because it was a little different. The heroine Christina was raised by Native American Indians. When Christina turns 19 she goes to London to seek revenge against her evil father. What I love the most about the story was seeing London and the English through Christina's eyes. I also loved Christina and Lyon as always Julie Garwood's writes a great couple with great chemistry and some laugh out loud scenes. The only complaint I had I would have like to see more of Rhone and Diana. Highly recommended.

Paradise Wild by Johanna Lindsey

Rating 3
Book Description:
A well-born Boston beauty, Corinne Barrows has traveled halfway around the world in search of Jared Burkett -- a dashing rogue and a devil; a honey-tongued charmer who seduced and despoiled her. . .and then abandoned the impetuous lady after awakening a need that only he could satisfy.
She has found him on the lush and lovely island of Hawaii. And now Corinne will have the revenge she craves: the total ruin of the blackguard who brought shame and scandal into her life. But Jared still possesses the power to excite her as no man has ever done--even as his own reckless heart is taken captive in their blistering war of wits and will--igniting a fire that could consume them both unless they surrender to it with wild abandon in the heat of the tropic night.

My Review:
The only Johanna Lindsey books I have read are her Mallory Series, which I love. I had to pick a Johanna Lindsey book for a reading challenge I was participating in at Shelfari.com. I picked this book because of the setting, it takes place in Hawaii 1890s.

I like books where there is a lot of banter and arguing between the hero and heroine. This book there is so much anger and fighting between Corrine and Jared that it was hard to read at times. Jared has so much anger toward Corrine's father that his treatment of Corrine is horrible. I just have a problem when the hero crosses that line. In the end I liked how you saw Corrine grow up and mature through out the book. So I'm giving it 3 stars.

Never Seduce a Scoundrel by Sabrina Jefferies

Rating 4.5
May contain spoilers

Book Description:
Lady Amelia Plume has many admirers; too bad they’re all fortune hunters and fops who can’t provide the exotic adventures she seeks. The ballrooms of Mayfair have become more appealing since the arrival of Major Lucas Winter—an American marine with a dangerous past and a brooding air. Lucas is brash, arrogant…and scandalously tempting. Every thrilling kiss sparks deeper desire, yet Amelia suspects that Lucas has a hidden motive in wooing her and she means to discover it, by any means necessary…
Lucas came to London to find the cad who embezzled money from a naval contractor. The captivating Lady Amelia could be the key to his quest, but what started as simple flirtation has become a delicious dance of seduction. And when a rival jeopardizes Amelia’s reputation, Lucas must choose what he wants most—the chance to avenge his past, or a future filled with fiery passion…

My Review:
I have just recently discovered Sabrina Jeffries this year. Earlier this year I read her The Royal Brotherhood Series and love them all. This is the first book in her School for Heiresses series. On of the themes I love is when the hero or heroine suffer from a condition that is common knowledge today. In this story the hero suffers from claustrophobia and one of my favorite scenes in the book is when the Amelia helps Lucas deal with it. I really enjoyed Amelia and Lucas' story. It is unusual for the hero to be American, it seems that there are a lot of historicals where an American Heiress goes to London to find a husband.
If you enjoy Lisa Kleypas, Julie Garwood, or Julia Quinn you should give Sabrina Jeffries a chance.

Rating 4!!

There’s just one complication: Leila didn't know he was her ninja. To win her, Marsh will have to woo her. But can he make Leila forget their decades of verbal sparring in time to stop her from making the biggest mistake of her life?

My Thoughts:

Suzanne Brockmann is one of my favorite authors. Her Troubleshooters Series is one of my favorite series. In the 90s Suzanne wrote for the Love Swept line for years a lot of her early titles have been out of print. At one point they were selling for hundreds of dollars on EBay. In the last few years they have been slowly re-released.
Kiss and Tell is the first book in the Sunrise Key trilogy. If you like straight up contemporary romances then you should check this out. I thought the romance between Marsh and Lelia is a sweet story. The story is a little dated (original release date 1996), but it still works.
I can not wait for to read Lelia's brothers story in March 09.
